Yu-Ru Huang, a multimedia artist and an adjunct professor of art history, received her BA from National Taiwan Normal University and her MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.
Yu-Ru explores the essence of time and place through art creation and presented her artworks in shows internationally (Taipei, New York, California, Texas).
Her art projects has received multiple grant supports (such as CACHH, HAA, TIF, THSH and others) and have collaborated with museums and art organizations (such as NTMoFA and TFAA)
Her works have been used for publications in Japan and in the US. Her installation in the art gallery (for her Individual Artist Grant from CACHH) was reinstalled onstage for a performance at Asia Society.
She has collaborated with Houston’s diverse communities to celebrate Houston’s diversity since 2009, for which was cited by Mayor Sylvester Turner of Houston in 2016. Her artwork was presented to Mayor Annise Parker of Houston by Houston’s international community in 2015.
Her latest works explore the beauty of handwriting in a digital age.
Her art projects engaged people who are normally outside of the art community in the process of art creation.
In the Echoes of Language project, sponsored in part by the HAA in 2012 and in 2013-14, she explores the essence of the word “Language” (vs languages) in a diverse society. Derived from a collection of 300+ people’s handwritten words (or digits), this series of artworks bear witness to our time and place.
The Talking Door, installed in the Vietnam War Memorial explores the “essence of commemoration” for the ongoing conflicts around the globe.
The Talking Lantern, installed in Houston’s Taiwanese Community Center, is a meeting place for people’s words and their meanings.
The mural project, Time in a Tide Pool (refers to the ebb and flow of human life, the effect of climate, and the shared stories) was sponsored by HAA in 2019.
The project, the Human behind the Objects, was sponsored by the TIF (re-granting from the Andy Warhol Foundation in Arts) in 2021.
For Houston’s Taiwanese Community Center, she designed a library to display historical archives of immigrants from Taiwan (https://www.houston-taiwanese.org/about1.html). And she established cultural programs to explore the essence of Taiwanese-American cultural heritage
