Yu-Ru Huang, a multimedia Taiwanese American artist and adjunct professor of art history, received her BA from National Taiwan Normal University and her MFA from RIT in New York.
Her art projects have received multiple grants (such as CACHH, HAA, TIF, THSH, and others) and collaborated with museums and art organizations (such as NTMoFA and TFAA). Her works have been published in Japan and the U.S.
As an artist, she was cited by Mayor Sylvester Turner of Houston in 2016 for her works celebrating Houston’s diversity since 2009.
Her project, sponsored in part by the HAA/City of Houston, explored the essence of handwriting in the digital age. Derived from the collaboration of 300+ people’s handwritings this series of artworks bears witness to our time and place. The Talking Door, installed at the Vietnam War Memorial, explores the “essence of commemoration” for ongoing conflicts around the globe.
The mural project Time in a Tide Pool—referring to the ebb and flow of human life, the effects of climate, and shared stories—was sponsored by HAA in 2019 and later received a TIF award from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
She designed the first library in the U.S. to openly collect and display historical archives related to Taiwanese American heritage (link). She also developed programs to explore the essence of Taiwanese American identity in arts.
